Stanford and Penn State Maintain Lead in Final Fall NACDA Directors' Cup Division I Standings

Cleveland, Ohio - Eight-time champion Stanford University (Cal.) and Penn State University, close out the fall standings in the lead of the NACDA Directors' Cup Division I standings.

Stanford scored in five sports, including its national championship in men's cross country. The Cardinal also posted runner-up finishes in women's cross country, men's soccer and women's volleyball; and placed fifth in women's soccer, to record 443 points.

Penn State narrowed the gap to 79 points by adding a 15th place finish in football. The Nittany Lions now have 364 points and placed second in field hockey, third in women's soccer, fifth in men's soccer, 17th in volleyball and 25th in women's cross country. They are followed by Notre Dame (Ind.), in third with 319 points; Michigan, fourth with 297 points; and Wake Forest (N.C.), in fifth with 277 points.

These are the final fall standings and include the sports of women and men's cross country, field hockey, I-A and I-AA football and women and men's soccer. In addition to Stanford, winning national championships were Brigham Young in women's cross country; Wake Forest in field hockey; Ohio State in I-A football; Western Kentucky in I-AA football; Portland (Ore.) in women's soccer; UCLA in men's soccer; and Southern California in volleyball.

The NACDA Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 women's and 10 men's. Each national champion receives 100 points.
